Compare credit cards to make sure you get the best

Just about everyone today has a small square of plastic in his or her wallet. Many people have multiple credit cards and use them all interchangeably. People used to only look for the lowest APR credit cards because that was all credit card companies had to offer. There was the odd airline miles card here and there, but for a lot of people that mattered little because they did not travel a great deal, if at all.

Now credit cards have evolved. Credit card companies offer dozens of different cards in order to best suit potential customers. In many ways, this new slew of choices is great for you because it gives you the chance to search credit cards in order to find that perfect card that will best suit your lifestyle. The only downside is that with all these choices, you may start to feel a little daunted by all the possibilities, especially if there is more than one card that seems to suit your needs. Will you want a rewards credit card? If so, what reward do you want? Are you looking for a 0 balance transfer card? Or maybe you are still searching for that lowest APR credit card. Before you start floundering in the world of credit cards online (as that will be your best bet to search for credit cards and comparing them), you should know what types are out there and which ones you will want to take a closer look at.

  • Low APR Credit Cards. If you plan on carrying a balance more often than not, a getting the lowest APR credit card will be to your benefit. Some cards will only offer a low APR as an introductory offer that will last for a set amount of time, but sometimes you will get lucky and be offered a low APR straight away. The better your credit history is, the better your APR offer will be. If you find a credit card with a lower APR, you can usually transfer your balance over and save a great deal of money.
  • Balance Transfer Credit Cards. Or you can transfer your balance over to one of these. Many of these cards come as 0 balance transfer credit cards. When you transfer a balance from another card to this one, you can have a 0 percent APR, which is great as long as you avoid making new purchases (as the 0 percent will not apply to them, just the initial balance), and pay off the entire balance within the period the 0 percent lasts.
  • Rewards Credit Cards. These are getting quite popular; you earn points, airline miles, or other discounts for the amounts of money you spend. You can then redeem your rewards for airline tickets, hotel reservations, or various gift certificates. Shop around to find the card that offers you the best rewards you know you will use.
  • Cash Back Cards. Another credit card reward program comes in the form of cash rewards credit cards. For every dollar you spend, you get a certain percentage back. Usually the percentage is low, such as 1 percent, which may not be very handy if you do not spend very much within one year. Others may give you higher percentages, but they usually come with extra fees or requirements.
  • Airline Miles Cards. These have been around longer than the rewards cards, but act in a similar manner. You earn either miles or points for every dollar you spend, and can eventually trade those miles or points for a trip, provided the number of miles/points you have is able to support the trip.
  • Secured Cards. These cards require you to put your own money down as your credit limit. If you have bad credit or no credit, this is a good way for you to rebuild your credit and show creditors your newfound responsibility.
  • Pre-paid Cards. You deposit your own money on these cards and then use the card the same way you would use a gift card at a store.

Knowing which credit card will work best for you, you can begin narrowing down your field of choices. If you know you want a cash rewards credit card, then when you do a search for credit cards, those will be the ones you want to look at. Be sure to read all the fine print so you can find out any fees the card might have, as well as the APR and any extra stipulations the card might have. Find out if there is an introductory rate that will jump up to something higher later on, what the grace period is, your online options, and how much you will be charged if your payment is late.

Pay close attention to how you use your current credit cards. Examine how often you use them, how often you carry a balance (if at all), where you use them the most, and any other spending habits you might have. You can write down all your information to keep track of it and from there can make even better decisions when it comes to your new credit card. You might even want to look at your past bills to find out how much you spent using your credit card in the past year. For example, if you decided upon a cash rewards credit card and find you spent $25,000 the previous year, you could get $250 back, which means that card could be very good for you.
