Compare Credit Cards or Face a Debt Collector
Have you ever questioned yourself what happens to people who fail to pay off their credit card balance? Or better what happens to the debt itself? This is not a simple matter, for debt collection is a multi billion business in America. What is more, millions of Americans owe money to different financial institutions.
Debt collecting is usually done by special collection agencies. Banks do not bother themselves with these matters. For them it is inconvenient and expensive. In their turn debt collection agencies do not always act in accordance with laws and simple ethics. In contrary they use all available means in order to get the money back.
If you owe some money to a financial institution and you are late with your payments be prepared that at some point a debt collection agency will contact you. There are some useful tips that may help you to avoid problems.
First of all communicate with the agency in writing. You know the saying "the written words remain".
Secondly, try to pay the full amount as soon as possible. If you cannot do that, try to negotiate with the collection agency the payment schedule.
Finally, if you managed to reach some form of agreement with agency, get it in writing. And remember not to send cash. Every time you pay, get a receipt.
Very often debt collectors violate the law. Of course harassment and abuse in collecting debts are prohibited by law. In spite of this, agencies quite often play dirty tricks so as to make you pay the credit card debt.
The most popular trick is calling. Debt collectors can make you continuous phone calls. If you hang up a debt collector can do nothing with this. But if the phone calls continue you need to take actions. Tell the agency that you would prefer to communicate in writing. You also can send a "cease and desist letter" in which you tell to stop phoning you and start written communication.
Another situation is when a debt collector starts to threaten you or your relatives. They may phone your spouse and tell that if you do not pay back the money you owe, the collection agency will repossess your car. This is a violation of Fair Debt Collection Practice Act. This is what they usually tell people in financial distress. The collection agency knows that you will not persecute them and that is why they lie to you.
Among other tricks used by collection agencies is that they tell debtors their debt cannot file bankruptcy. This can hardly be true. Practically all kinds of debt are dischargeable in bankruptcy. Your debt collector hopes you are not aware of the laws. Knowing your rights (as well as obligations) can be very beneficial.
After you have done all mentioned above it is time to think over your way of managing your personal finances. Next time when you compare credit cards and make an application try to foresee the outcome.

Anything can happen when you have a credit card. The most awful thing is debt. It's easy to get into it but difficult to get rid of it.
