If your purchase is a matter of dispute, you should send a letter to your credit card company and get a temporary credit. It means that you will not have to pay for the product until the matter is settled.

If they are not, you will have to make up for all the expenses. However, you'd better try to settle the problem with the merchant. You won't be able to do anything, if the bill for the damaged item is paid. Therefore, if you are dissatisfied with the quality of the credit card purchase, take all the possible measures. Using a credit card you are most likely to win.
