Can Retailers Cut High Credit Card Processing Fees?

Nowadays credit cards have become an integral part in the life of consumers and retailers. Consumers have got accustomed to plastics as they bring convenience and save our time. Therefore merchants take pains to follow the novelties in the credit card industry and try to satisfy all the needs of their customers. It should be mentioned that not all retailers gain profits from this method of payment. Different gas stations and convenience stores are deprived of their revenues on account of credit card acceptance costs. Can they find any methods to cut them?

As a matter of fact, retailers bear a heavy burden of the credit card processing fees. It's important that National Association of Convenience Stores (NACS) gave a report on credit card acceptance fees and this sum amounts to $6.6 billion dollars. The account showed that the costs grew by $1 billion dollars against the previous year. Retailers are much preoccupied by this fact and think of finding a solution.

The stumbling block is the so-called "interchange fees". The matter is that these fees are considerably higher in the USA than in other countries. For instance, in Europe these rates are lower. In fact, the interchange is the basic part of credit card fees. Since it was introduced, it has been significantly raised that entailed serious consequences.

It's interesting that in spite of the gas prices increase, retailers by no means get much profit. As some gas station owners say, their gross profit is too low to speak of revenues. Consequently they see no reasons for making such deals.

While credit customers use their gasoline credit cards to advantage, merchants suffer great losses. NACS is summoned to help retailers. It is elaborating different programs that are aimed at solving this problem. For instance, the new "interchange plus" program gives merchants a chance to select a card processor. And your choice is of great importance!

At present, you can choose one of the two types of card processors and they differ in the methods of charging. Your processor may charge either cents or percents. On condition that you choose the first type, the fees for card acceptance will be the same. It means that you will not face high credit card fees when the prices boost.

Except experts and associations, individual entrepreneurs are also taking pains to find a way out. In their response to credit card companies they start developing proprietary credit cards. Firstly, it stands as a good incentive for customers. In addition to that all the profits for merchants are quite evident as it's cheaper to issue the cards and to bear all the expenses than to pay huge sums for transaction. Such programs help to save a pretty penny for retailers every year.

On the whole, there are ways to control credit card processing fees. However, this problem remains daunting due to a large number of retailers all over the country. Specialists are sure that only severe measures will help you to cope with this situation. It may happen one day that merchants and credit card companies will come to an agreement, and business owners will gain benefit from their customers' credit card deals.

The statistics shows that young people became more reasonable in credit card management and most of them do not have loads of debts.

A recent opinion poll conducted among college students revealed that 92% of young adults realize that damage credit history and low credit score could have a negative effect on their future financial standing and cause problems with qualifying for loans.
