The Right Credit Card Deals – The Right Start to a Good Credit History
Throughout our lives, all of our efforts and accomplishments have been carefully monitored through files. All of our hard work has been put together in portfolios and people have graded what we think is our best work. This is a process that never ends. For a person's entire life, he/she is being looked at carefully whether it is a teacher or professor looking at a research paper, an employer checking over a resume, or a creditor looking at a person's credit history.
This may not be the most comfortable experience for someone, having to be constantly looked at for a lifetime, but there is something good about it. We can essentially control our own destinies when it comes to what is in these portfolios and files. This is no different for our credit history because the actions we take with our credit (or the actions leading up to applying for credit for the first time) greatly affect the outlook of our credit report. Good credit can also lead to getting some of the best credit card deals that are available.
What's So Great About Having a Strong Credit History?
Most people understand that they will have to get credit at some point, but they may not realize just how important it really is. If you have a desire to get anything - a brand new home, car, insurance, a loan, etc., then it is imperative that you have good credit. It takes a great deal of time building a good credit score but it can be damaged very quickly and take much longer to restore back to a respectable rating.
It is important that you practice good credit habits right from the start. Practice spending your money wisely and keeping a budget. Your credit rating reflects how well you can manage money. Your credit history basically tells creditors how much they can trust you with their money. If you have shown them that you are irresponsible with money, they will be much less willing to give you that loan you need to get that house.
If you do not practice good credit habits as soon as you start spending money for the first time, it will be very hard to establish better spending habits later on. A late payment, as simple as it may seem, can hurt a credit score and your increased financial problems can lead to a credit score that creditors will not like at all.
The Six Steps to Keep Your Credit Score on the Right Track
First, you should request a credit report from one of the three national credit bureaus - Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion. If you do not have a file, you can get one started. If you already have a file, make sure that the information about you is accurate. If anything seems inaccurate, contact the credit agencies and get it changed.
Open a bank account but it is recommended that you open both a savings and checking account. By maintaining these accounts responsibly, you will show creditors that you are trustworthy and you can handle your money. When the time comes to talk to a creditor about getting credit, having strong bank accounts will work very much in your favor. Just be sure that you make all your payments on time.
Another good idea is to open utilities accounts in your name. Utilities include electric, gas, and phone services. Make all your payments on time with these services as well. If you move, make sure to close the accounts so someone else is not paying in your name. If that person forgets to make a payment, it hurts you and your chances to receive credit.
If you are in school, apply for a college student credit card. In most cases with credit card companies, your parents or guardians will be the primary borrowers. However, if you are allowed to co-sign, your loan will show up in the credit report. If you are responsible with a student credit card, then you will be on your way to establishing good credit.
Apply for some sort of credit card. It can be a secured credit card, unsecured credit card, or gasoline card, whatever. It really does not matter what kind of card you get because it is all about establishing credit. You want to get a file started on your credit history and show the bureaus that you have started some kind of credit. To ensure that you have good credit to start, do not use the card too often and make sure the payments are on time. If you cannot pay off the entire balance try to at least pay for the minimum. However, to further make your case, attempt to pay more than the minimum each time.
Always remember that all of your actions can have a consequence when trying to establish credit. Do not do something irresponsible that can have the credit card companies hiking up your rates and fees, causing you to pay more money. Also, the actions you take at the beginning can and will affect you as you try to get that house or car later in your life.
